Every two years, a new revision of the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS) is released. Despite the disruption over the last 18 months caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the 9th revision of the GHS remained on track, and is now available online. The key changes are as follows:
- Revision of Chapter 2.1 (Explosives) to better address their explosion hazard when they are not packaged for transport.
- Changes to the decision logics (“decision trees”) for various hazards.
- Revision of the classification and labelling summary tables in Annex 1.
- Revision and further rationalization of precautionary statements.
- Updated references to OECD guidelines for the testing of chemicals in Annexes 9 and 10. These annexes provide guidance on conducting tests to assess hazards to the aquatic environment.
